Night market in Goa
It’s amazing what you can find at a night market in Goa - especially being sold by people with broad cockney accents.
The night market is a tourist market. It was like a warm, night time version of Camden and not really the authentic Indian experience we were hoping for. But, we made sure we only bought our take-home tat from Indians, not over-ripe ex-pats.
As usual we were dedicated to the lighting cause and managed to collect photos of a wide range of inspired homemade lighting ideas and shading devices for compact fluorescent lamps.
The car park was lit by linear fluorescent lamps in trees (looked a bit like Sharon’s PLDA workshop in Norway!):

Our first real innovation was this curved foam lamp shield designed to protect the eyes of the older tie-dyed hippies against a back spill of a compact fluorescent lamp:

The next was a design that even Ingo Maurer would be proud of - lampshades made from folded pieces of newspaper:

The simplicity of this striking piece of folded card was breathtaking and almost effective:

The iPhone camera couldn’t quite capture the intricate complexity of the shading from this piece of cloth hung round a CFL but it made us stop and think for at least a second or two:

At the more unusual end of the spectrum we had lights made from bubbles:

And, of course, your classic paper sphere:

But nothing came close to the amazing Indian paper star lamp shades:

And yes, at just over a pound each, we did buy 10 of these to take home!
