Social Light Movement Workshop - Liège 2011

The first SLM workshop is to be held in Liège, Belgium in September.

It is a collaboration between the City of Liège, LUCI and founders of the Social Light Movement: Isabelle Corten of Radiance; Elettra Bordonaro, Olsson & Linder; and Light Collective.

The SLM believe that by using the medium of light, we are able to transform the disadvantaged areas in cities to make them more comfortable, safe and attractive urban environments.

The workshop aims to show how to design well lit environments for underprivileged housing areas. It will demonstrate how to involve the community in the design of their own environment and therefore create civic pride amongst those who live there.

The main aims of the workshop include educating the participants and encouraging them to work in similar environments, educating the city about the benefits of good lighting and gaining the support of city administrations, urban planners, architects, landscape designers, electrical engineers and other associated disciplines.

The workshop also aims to create attention, arouse public opinion and influence decision makers.

The first part of the workshop will be theoretical where the participants will be asked to create a concept for the chosen location, to develop the idea, undertake mock-ups, and liaise with residents and to finally present the proposals to the City of Liège.

The second part of the workshop will be a practical demonstration held on the last evening of the workshop. The workshop is open to students from Liège but also to international participants.
