The dream becomes a reality

We are not long back from a trip to Liege. It was short haul by our normal standards – a mere two hours by Eurostar (which is looking distinctly shabby these days).

We spent two days wandering around an area called Sclessin, which is to be the site of our Social Light Movement Workshop.

We mentioned this on our blog back in March when it was still at the dream stage. It’s now set to become a reality thanks to the generous support of manufacturers: Schreder, Meyer, Martini and Fergi, for the workshop, and Thorn specifically for the guerrilla element.

The workshop is officially part of the LUCI ‘City under Microscope of LUCI’ event and is also supported by the City of Liege. It will be held from the 26-30 September.

Sclessin is a disconnected, run down, forgotten suburb of Liege with no urban identity and largely lit in yellow – perfect for a theoretical makeover!

The first part of the workshop will be theoretical, exploring the SLM methodology and offering the opportunity to create conceptual work to present to the city.

The second part will be a practical demonstration in the style of a guerrilla lighting event held on the last evening. With sites as diverse as a Lidl car park and a railway tunnel, the aim is to show the participants how light can transform forgotten spaces by getting them to create the installation themselves.

We already have almost all of our participants and almost all of our funding. We are ready to change the way city lighting is approached. We are ready to take lighting design out of the city centre and into the community. Come with us or keep an eye out for the results…
