Cage
Foscarini for Diesel

Foscarini has created a range of groovy luminaires for hip clothing brand Diesel. The Successful Living range includes Cage which was inspired by old lanterns. It has a simple luminous body protected by a decorative cage, the contrast between the metallic grille of the irregular structure, with its almost handmade feel and the inner diffuser, providing the appeal. Cage is available in three colours and in hanging, floor and table versions.

MC040 light fitting from Collingwood

MC040
Collingwood

Back in the day, Collingwood was one of the first companies into the whole LED thing so it has learned a thing or two along the way. The boringly-named MC040 is one of its best-looking LED luminaires to date. The brushed stainless steel fitting has a cube shape, delivering smooth light from four Rebel LEDs. It has the rare advantage of being retro- fitted directly to mains.

Le Soleil light fitting from Foscarini

Le Soleil
Foscarini

Vicente Garcia Jimenez’s design subtly recalls the outline of Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Guggenheim Museum in New York but its asymmetric bands perform an extra function: They act as reflective surfaces on the inner side facing upwards and focus the light directly onto the surface below, producing a soft, delicate effect. It’s available in white, red or aquamarine.

Ice Lady light fitting from Brand van Egmond

Ice Lady
Brand van Egmond

Brand van Egmond comprises the Dutch design duo of William Brand and Annet van Egmond and this florid number is their first co-creation with Swarovski. The company describes this recently extended range of chandeliers and wall lamps as “distinctly female”. “But keep your distance, for she is made to be admired from afar!” You have been warned.

Fork
Foscarini for Diesel

If you eschewed a foreign holiday in the summer for a British ‘staycation’, then you can keep the memory alive with this latest offering from Foscarini. Fork is an ironic lamp inspired, says the company, by the casual world of the campsite. The canvas shade has typical tent stitching, with visible fabric layers. You will of course need an electric hook-up, Hunter’s wellies and a Black’s folding chair for the full effect.

Glass panels from Bottle Alley

Glass panels
Bottle Alley

Not exactly a luminaire but it’s worth knowing where you can get your mitts on interesting glass that looks fantastic when backlit. Applications include illuminated bar tops, reception desks, work- tops, splashbacks and wet rooms. The panels are made from recycled bottles and can be water- jet cut to any shape. Thicknesses are from 6 to 22mm and sheets can be up to 1,120 x 750mm.

QuadroLED light fitting

QuadroLED
Illuma

Illuma is introducing some pretty tidy LED fittings these days, not least this. Designed as an LED replacement for modulars and CFL downlights, the impressive QuadroLED has an LOR of 85.6 and packs a pokey 2,000 lumens, equivalent to a 4 x 14W T5. It achieves this by using a clever combination of Tridonic Talexx LED engines and a satin reflector from Jordan.

Adelie streetlight fitting

Adelie
Thorn

It’s great to see luminaires that could only be done with LEDs. And this is one. Adelie is a post top-mounted luminaire that combines a ring of 32 x 1.1W LEDs with a funnel-shaped canopy to create a soft indirect light for parks and building surrounds. Be warned though: from a distance, the luminaire looks like a flying saucer hovering in space…

Homeworks iPhone app
Lutron

For years, the controls industry has talked about the mobile phone as a one-stop controller for the lighting and other services in the home. Well at last, thanks the iTunes App Store, it looks like it is starting to become a reality. Lutron has written a tidy app that will allow its popular Homeworks system to be accessed and controlled via Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices. Smart.

Topix light fitting

Topix
Delta Light

An instant classic from the Belgians, which has won them their first Red Dot award. But the Topix is so simple, you wonder why no one has come up with it before. Best of all, it looks fantastic in a wall-mounted, loose grouping. The body is semi-recessed, and it’s available in white or grey, with a choice of warm white, cold white, or blue light.

LED Reflector
Megaman

Last year white LED downlights came of age, now it’s the turn of the lamps. And Megaman’s novel LED re lector range will make the Big Four sit up. The lamps have a vertical array of LEDs mounted back-to-back to mimic a point source and feature impressive stats, including a lamp-to-lamp colour tolerance of 100K, life of 20,000 hours and luminous intensities of up to 3,600 candelas.

ILO streetlight fitting

ILO streetlight
Kingfisher Lighting

Pared down but packing some solid engineering, the ILO is Kingfisher’s contribution to LED streetlighting. With 36, 54, 72 or 90 LEDs, lamp output ranges from 3,400 to 9,500lm. Each LED is housed in mirrored optic to give the distribution required. Optics and gear are sealed (IP66) for the life of the lantern which Italian manufacturer AEC says is 90,000 hours.

Glam
Mizar

Designed for low-voltage tungsten halogen and metal-halide lamps, Glam is a downlight on holiday. A range of different finishes, from mirrored to sandblasted, plus bright colours and floral patterning, allow the creation of different chromatic effects and contrasts. The Maya pendant is made from blown Murano glass with a nickel mirror finish. The pendant is engraved with ribbons of colour which come in a choice of either black, red or amber. Porcelain chandelier
Diffuse

Diffuse’s range of custom-made translucent porcelain chandeliers pop up all over the place, including in the recent award-winning Eurostar Premier Business Lounge. As a result, the company has now created a three-tier, 600 x 600mm version for its standard range. It is available with plain porcelain tiles, or specifiers can select from a range of embossed surface textures.

Maia light fitting

Maia
Waldmann Lighting

The Maia task light incorporates Waldmann’s Ambio microprism technology for high light transmission but glare-free, even illumination. The ‘rod and joint’ mechanism allows simple, single- handed operation. The lamp head features a very thin aluminium foil, and the support tube and the floor stand are made of anodised aluminium. Maia uses an 11W compact fluorescent lamp.

Lets
Almerich

This month’s Euroluce show in Milan will see a strong contingent from Spain. The Spanish do what we used to do in the UK: design and make cutting-edge luminaires. Conceived by local talent Luis Eslava, the Lets plays with the table lamp icon, in this case reversing the formula so the familiar shape is the negative rather than the positive. A nice piece of accessible and democratic design. Ikea, take note!

F+P 550 series light fitting

F+P 550
Louis Poulsen

Shown at Frankfurt and now shipping, the F+P 550 is the first of a range of lighting fixtures, the result of a partnership between Louis Poulsen and Foster + Partners. The design teams wanted to use large numbers of LEDs to create a ixture that did not just challenge the technical limits of LEDs but “would express the very transference of light”. Er, whatever you say, guys.

Delphinium light fitting

Delphinium
Brand Van Egmond

Brand Van Egmond doesn’t call its stylish pendants luminaires. The Dutch duo – designers William Brand and Annet van Egmond – refer to them as light sculptures. And while it would be easy to dismiss this as pretension, in their case the moniker is justifiable. This is Delphinium; the structure comprises wrought iron garlands upon which large glass dangles are suspended.

Frame light fitting

Frame
B.Lux

One big trend of recent years has been for street lighting and furniture to converge. The trend is more pronounced in warmer climes such as Spain, where B.Lux has introduced Frame, an outdoor light collection created by Barcelona-based designer Mario Ruiz. The Frame is a rectangular light made of injected aluminium and a pressed glass diffuser with a fluorescent light source.
