The Northern Lights: but what are they?

The Northern Lights have been a topic of discussion lately as the typically northern phenomenon has been visible in the skies over Britain and Ireland.

The last time the Aurora Borealis was visible so far south was in 2003, at the last peak of the solar cycle.

The chance of a sighting is greatly improved outside of a city but if you are lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the spectacle - what exactly are you looking at?
