Police to investigate lamp post death

Police and health and safety officials are to probe the cause of a falling lamp post in west London that killed a baby boy in his buggy. The one-year-old boy was hit by the lamp post in Chiswick on Tuesday. A female pedestrian was also injured. The boy was taken by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital in east London soon after the incident but died later.

Top firms unite to standardise LED engines

Top manufacturers including Philips, Osram, Zumtobel, Trilux, Panasonic, Toshiba, Cooper, Schreder and Acuity Brands are to unite this month to agree standard specifications for the interfaces of LED engines. The move is crucial if LED engines in luminaires are to be interchangeable in the same as conventional lamps.

Government announces £620m street lighting boost

The street lighting sector is set receive a major injection of Government funding. Seven local authorities have won a total of £620 million PFI funding for street lighting programmes.The funding – for Warrington, Durham, Stockton, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire, and Kirklees – was announced by Transport Minister Sadiq Khan.

Philips adds design cred with purchase of Luceplan

Philips has moved into the designer luminaires market this week with the purchase of Milan-based Luceplan for an undisclosed sum. The move will be widely seen as a departure from Philips’ established acquisition pattern of infilling markets and technology to boost the company’s strong position in LEDs.

Zumtobel to manufacture lamps

 
In a major strategic move, Zumtobel is set to join the Big Four as a lamp producer. It will manufacture retrofit LED lamps – including GU10s, E14 and E27 reflector – at its factory in Dornbirn in Austria. They will be branded Ledon and sold to comsumers via DIY stores and retail outlets across Europe.

Audi A8 is first car with all-LED headlights

 
Audi has won the race to create the first car with all-LED headlights. The 196mph V10 A8 supercar features full beams, dipped beams and daylight running all using white LED sources. Other functions include motorway beams, cornering lights and all-weather lights.

Encapsulite clarifies upgrade of top-selling outdoor Stick-Lite

 
Encapsulite has moved to clarify the rating of its popular outdoor Stick-Lite fluorescent luminaire after an upgrade. The 24mm diameter IP64-rated version of the Stick-Lite is being discontinued, says the company. It will be replaced by an improved 30mm diameter version that will carry the letters WP for waterproof.

GE combines LED and fittings arms

GE Lighting has combined Lumination, its LED operation, and GE Lighting Systems, its commercial and industrial fittings group, to form GE Lighting Solutions. Both operations are in the US. The company says the change is necessary to serve the rapidly-growing market for indoor and outdoor fittings that use LED sources and other energy-efficient technologies.

Ambitious ILE targets interior lighting designers

 
The Institution of Lighting Engineers is to undertaken a radical modernisation during 2010 and will rebrand itself as the Institution of Lighting Professionals, embracing interior lighting and targeting lighting designers and consultants as members.
