Axing of schools programme is blow to industry
Order books in the lighting industry are set to be hit following the axing of the Building Schools for the Future programme.
On Monday the Government announced deep cuts to the £55 billion rebuilding plan, including the halting of 750 planned schools projects.

Around 750 school projects will be halted
“It’s clearly disappointing for us and our members,” said Nic Mallinson of the LIF. “But we are encouraged by some of the other initiatives such as the by Eco Schools projects. Anything that speeds up the refurbishment programme will be welcomed by us as lighting has a big role to play in delivering low carbon objectives.”
Incoming president of the ILE, Alistair Scott said the scrappage was not unexpected. “However it has left the Institution’s members with a sense of disappointment, as it will clearly have an adverse effect on the lighting profession.
“In these difficult times, it is now even more important that those in the lighting industry work together to emphasise the importance of lighting, not only to education but to society as a whole”.
