Government announces £620m street lighting boost
The street lighting sector is set receive a major injection of Government funding.
Seven local authorities have won a total of £620 million PFI funding for street lighting programmes.The funding – for Warrington, Durham, Stockton, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire, and Kirklees – was announced by Transport Minister Sadiq Khan.
The Government said better street lighting will help to improve road safety in these areas as well as helping to reduce crime. The local authorities are now being asked to prepare an outline business case for a PFI street lighting scheme. Once this is approved by the department and the inter-departmental project review group, the local authorities will start a procurement process.
