Emerging from the dark

Frankenstein is in the middle of a sell-out run at the National Theatre and the production, directed by Danny Boyle, depends on the largest number of dimmers ever seen in the National’s Olivier Theatre.

The NJD DPX12/4 dimmers were specified by White Light and the first thing that audiences see when they arrive at the theatre is a spectacular ‘light bulb ceiling’. The triangular installation consists of a mirrored surface below which hang just over 3,100 assorted incandescent lamps.

The ceiling is intended to represent the forces of electricity harnessed by Frankenstein and to provide ‘dazzling light’ for the moment the creature is born. The piece uses tungsten rather than LEDs because it better represents the show’s industrial-age setting. The lighting is controlled using pixel mapping and a media server to create dynamic patterns and movement.
