Light-inspired seafront
The Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate has opened a light-inspired building.
The seafront building is designed by David Chipperfield Architects and Arup has been involved in the project since 2006.
The gallery is a two-storey building – with an internal area of 2,730 square metres – that is composed of six laminated and etched glass-clad prisms. Daylight is central to the design but it was also important to bear in mind that the art needs protection from daylight damage.
Windows and skylights have been carefully positioned so the galleries are free from direct sunlight. For further protection, mesh or blackout blinds can be drawn across the skylights. In a first for a new gallery in the UK, it has achieved a Breeam Bespoke ‘Very Good’ rating.
