Raising the roof

Designed by Firefly Lighting Design, the new Hakkasan restaurant in Mumbai was a major challenge for the designers.

In order to a get a licence, the main dining area had to have a retractable roof – meaning no pendants could be suspended from the roof and no downlights could be used.

To work around this, the design team developed pendants to hang from the walls and nearby partitions.

The large expanse of roof also allowed them to have some fun with water effects where they specified Rosco ripple projectors to give a swimming pool effect on the roof.
